You want to be a successful entrepreneur, your own boss, or head of an
amazing new company. Your business plan is ready and so is your strategy.
The only thing that’s missing is a great business logo that blows everyone away.
What makes a logo amazing?
What does it need to be an eye-catcher
that will get stuck in your customers’ minds?
You don’t know?
No need to panic.
We’ll tell you.
Before we go any further into detail, we’d like to point out that a great business logo and successful branding go hand in hand. Even if you have the greatest logo in the world, that won’t make up for messy and chaotic branding and vice versa.
Keep that in mind and spend time on refining brand ideas to make sure the time and money you spend on your logo design won’t be wasted.
A good logo never guarantees success, but it certainly helps (a lot) when entering the world of business.
Got it? Great. Then let’s get crackin’.
1. Make it nice and easy
Your logo should always be easy to describe and, likewise, easy to remember.
You’re likely to get more customers if they are capable of describing the logo to their mates who will then be able to recognize it if they come across it. Nobody will remember something super complicated.
Also your logo should be easily adaptable to different materials and types of media, making it adaptable to all of your correspondences and merchandise.
2. Less is more
Don’t add too many distracting elements to your logo. Meaning, you should opt for an easily readable font and get rid of taglines if possible – at least in your logo.
3. Be targeted
When planning your logo design, always keep your target audience in mind, as they determine the tone and style you want to adapt.
If you’re running a casual clothing company, for example, you wouldn’t want to appear strict and conventional, considering you probably want to sell your products to the laid-back, easy-going guy next door.
4. Make it representative
You should make sure that your logo embraces all the key features of your company, and that it represents the company as a whole – it is, after all, your logo and not someone else’s.
5. Be yourself
You don’t want to copy something that’s already out there. Aim at being original and memorable so you stand out from the crowd. Attract the clients you want to attract by putting yourself in their shoes.
Embrace empathy in your design.
6. Show us your true colors
Remember what we said about being targeted? Same goes for colors.
Be aware of the fact that different colors evoke different impressions. If you want to appear trustworthy and professional you might want to go for blue. Likewise, if your aim is to appear sensual you wouldn’t want to use lots of white.
7. Make it ever-lasting
Sometimes it’s good – and necessary – to follow recent trends, but with regard to your logo, keep in mind that you don’t want it to be outdated in a couple of months.
Your logo should remain unchanged for at least some time, if not forever.
We’re not saying that you absolutely have to stick to your logo for an eternity, but you can be equally, if not more, successful without changing it every few years. If you ever get bored, you can compare the logo changes and the success rates of Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
8. Reach for the stars – but be patient
There’s nothing wrong with having high ambitions, but be aware of the fact that you won’t become the leading expert in your domain just by having a great business logo.
It takes time to become popular and widely recognized. So don’t make any rushed changes to your logo and your branding just because sales figures don’t suddenly explode.
At the end of the day it depends on the success of your product.
Moral of the story?
The logo is often the first thing customers see and get to know about your company.
You want to make a good first impression, as this not only affects clients’ attitude towards your company and your services, but also potential purchase decisions.
So be personal.
Maybe even go for a hand-drawn, tailor-made logo. Not only because it’s out-of-the-box, but also because it makes it harder for cheaters to copy you.
Just have a look around, there are some freelancers out there who’d be happy to do the work for you and come up with something unique and creative that’s perfect for your company.
